What scent brings to mind your childhood, your favorite place, your life’s most meaningful moments? Fresh-mown grass, cookies baking, coffee brewing, a particular perfume? Our sense of smell is most closely connected to the hippocampus, one of the brain structures responsible for our memory, according to the website Exploring Your Mind. And according to the Smells and Emotions study by psychologist Silvia Álava, people remember 35 percent of what they smell and only 5 percent of what they see. Her study also noted smells usually evoke the emotions from that time, too.

Smells are a subject close to Scentsy’s heart. This family-owned company based in Idaho sells more than 100 fragrances and 100 scent-delivery items such as warmers and diffusers to bring memories to life without having to bake, brew or hit the backyard. The owners kicked off the business mixing wax in slow cookers in 2004 and have grown the business by giving people in 11 countries the chance to operate their own small business. They believe in giving more than they take, and they practice what they preach—contributing $9.7 million to 180 charities and organizations in the past 10 years.

Want to get involved with Scentsy yourself? Meet Michelle Colon, Independent Scentsy Consultant. Michelle is like many Nebraskans; she grew up in Omaha, married and started a family. When she was pregnant with her first child, she hit the books at Bellevue University, earning her bachelor’s degree in business and science. Now, like most average American families of two parents and two kids, she and her husband work full-time; she’s with Amazon, working in third-party performance management.

In February, Michelle decided to start her own business, with Scentsy. She figured because she bought the products herself, she might as well sell it and bring in a little income. The products are good, so why not? She shares the company’s philosophy, too—she wanted to build a community by meeting and working with other good people, which allows her to give back. So, while she hasn’t been at it long, she intends to work hard toward her goal. So, whether you’d like to buy products and join Michelle’s village or build a neighboring burg of your own, she can help you out.
