Log on to the Internet, search for Mexican restaurants and I’ll guarantee there are plentiful options … in any American city. Some will argue many of the country’s favorite dishes—such as fajitas, margaritas, chimichangas—aren’t “authentic” Mexican food at all. But open any menu and read those names (or tacos, enchiladas, tamales, tortilla chips and more), and you’ll find hunger knocking at your stomach.

Thanks to our southern neighbors, whether we vacation there or they immigrate here, our food history is ever richer for the sharing. Maybe you have an Omaha favorite already, but maybe you like to sample many offerings. If you haven’t already, how about trying this 2018 Best of Omaha winner? Fernando’s Café & Cantina.

Fernando’s is a family-oriented, 1993-founded eatery with a focus on Sonoran-style dishes. Chefs Mario, Martin and Antonio will bring the taste of Jalisco, Mexico, to your table through “made-from-scratch sauces, seasoned meats and signature recipes.” Not sure how “Sonoran” food expresses itself? Think flavorful seasonings and spices, not necessarily hot. But if you want it that way, Fernando’s homemade hot sauce is on your table. Create your own level of fire.

Fernando’s freshly made pico de gallo paired with flour chips is available as a sumptuous starter at the two restaurants, catered for your next party or available at metro Hy-Vee delis, too.

Want to learn more about the restaurant or the philosophy behind the business? Meet Mitch Tempus, president of Kennoa Corp., which owns Fernando’s. Mitch has more than 30 years of experience in management, manufacturing and sales in the food-service industry. He’s played key roles in well-known brands such as PepperJax and Sysco. Plus, he’s heavily involved in the Nebraska Restaurant Association, currently serving as the board’s secretary/treasurer. He’s the go-to guy for operating questions, compliments and complaints.

Mitch and wife Carole have been married 23 years and work daily at both Fernando’s locations. They spend their spare time hanging with grandkids Kenley and Noah, grilling on the patio and hitting the links for a quick round.
